The second joint online event of the Baden-Württemberg university medical centres (Freiburg/Heidelberg/Mannheim/Tübingen/Ulm) on NUM took place on 14 March 2025. This series of events was initiated in 2023 by the representatives of the Local Coordination Units (LokS) from Baden-Württemberg in order to strengthen cross-location and interdisciplinary exchange at state level.
In addition to selected representatives from the participating NUM locations, the 140 participants were also welcomed by a representative of the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts (MWK).
To kick off the event, Ralf Heyder, Head of the NUM Coordination Office at Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin, gave the audience an overview of current NUM developments, including a review of the NUM Convention 2025 and an outlook on the third NUM funding phase (NUM 3.0). The LokS representatives from Baden-Württemberg also presented a supplementary overview of the numerous activities of the Baden-Württemberg NUM locations as part of the current and future NUM sub-projects as well as in the specialised and organ-specific working groups (FOSA).
At the heart of the event were two expert keynote speeches on the newly founded NUM study network. Prof Dr Siegbert Rieg (Freiburg University Hospital) and Dr Elham Khatamzas (Heidelberg University Hospital) presented the NUM study network using the example of the Infection Network specialist network. In addition to the challenges and objectives of the NUM study network, they emphasised the benefits and importance of the new specialist network for infections for clinical research at the NUM sites. Prof. Dr Jan Purrucker and Prof. Dr Christoph Gumbinger, senior physicians in the Department of Neurology and Polyclinic at Heidelberg University Hospital, then presented the Rhine-Neckar Stroke Consortium and gave an outlook on the Stroke specialist network planned for the next NUM funding phase.
The final live evaluation of the event showed a positive mood, so that the series of events is to be continued in the future.
