RACOON infrastructure research project launched: RACOON CORE-PE for risk assessment in acute pulmonary embolism

RACOON

The aim of RACOON CORE-PE is to develop and validate AI-supported models to improve prognosis and treatment decisions in patients with acute pulmonary embolism. This is done as part of an automated risk assessment. This is important in order to identify patients who, in addition to anticoagulation to inhibit blood clotting, benefit from intensive medical monitoring and intensified and, if necessary, catheter-based or surgical intervention. To achieve this goal, comprehensive, advanced image analyses are carried out and imaging biomarkers are integrated with laboratory and clinical data.

One focus of RACOON CORE-PE is on the development of standardised procedures for assessing the prognosis of patients with acute pulmonary embolism. The research team is also focussing on the development of AI algorithms for the fully automated detection of prognostic, quantitative imaging biomarkers and AI-driven risk prediction models.

The successful development and validation of this module creates added value for patients with acute pulmonary embolism. This is made possible by early risk assessment and the associated clinical treatment decision. Furthermore, the development of the AI-based model can subsequently be used for other medical applications.

With the help of this project, a large data set of CT studies in acute pulmonary embolism, including clinical, laboratory and outcome data, is also being developed. This large and complex data set will then be available for further scientific research.
